Ford 230A vs 340A vs 445 vs 530A vs 540A vs 545 — Model Comparison

Ford's 230A through 545 series spans six distinct utility and industrial tractor models built on the same 3-cylinder engine platform. While they share a common lineage, each model was configured for different applications - from compact utility work to full-time loader and backhoe duty. This page puts the key differences side by side so you can quickly identify what sets each model apart.

Series Overview

The six models break into two clear groups based on size, wheelbase, and intended use:

Group Models Wheelbase Steering Brakes Primary Application
Compact Utility 230A, 530A 75.8″ Power Assist Expanding Shoe Utility, light industrial
Industrial 340A, 445, 540A, 545 81.1″ Hydrostatic Wet Disc Loader, backhoe, industrial

Within those groups, the models are differentiated primarily by engine displacement and available transmission options. The 230A is unique as the only model offered with a gasoline engine option. All others are diesel-only.

Engine Comparison

Specification 230A 340A 445 530A 540A 545
Fuel Type Gas or Diesel Diesel Diesel Diesel Diesel Diesel

4.2×4.2″ 4.2×4.4″ 4.4×4.4″ 4.4×4.4″ 4.4×4.4″
Displacement 158 cu.in. (gas)

Rated RPM 2,000 2,000 2,200 2,200 2,200 2,200

Key takeaway: The 530A, 540A, and 545 all share the same 201 cu.in. diesel engine. The difference between them is the chassis — the 530A uses the compact utility platform (shorter wheelbase, power-assist steering, expanding-shoe brakes) while the 540A and 545 sit on the larger industrial platform with hydrostatic steering and wet disc brakes. The 545 adds the widest tread width and highest base weight.

Available Transmissions

Transmission 230A 340A 445 530A 540A 545
4×4 Power Reversing
6×4 Manual Reversing
8×4 Manual (Synchronized)
8×2 Manual

Key takeaway: The 4×4 power reversing transmission — designed for continuous forward-reverse loader cycles — is only available on the 445, 540A, and 545. The 8×4 synchronized transmission is exclusive to the 230A and 530A utility models. The 8×2 manual is the common-denominator option available across all six models.

Steering & Brakes

Brake Type Expanding Shoe Wet Disc Wet Disc Expanding Shoe Wet Disc Wet Disc
Turning Radius (w/ Brakes) 9′9″ 10′7″ 10′2″ 9′9″ 10′7″ 11′0″

The 230A and 530A use a power-assist manual steering system with mechanical expanding-shoe brakes — a simpler, lighter-duty arrangement suited to utility work. The 340A, 445, 540A, and 545 all get full hydrostatic steering and wet disc brakes, which are more durable under the constant reversing and heavy braking demands of loader and backhoe operation.

Dimensions & Weight

Dimension 230A 340A 445 530A 540A 545
Overall Length 126.5″ 122.0″ 121.4″ 126.5″ 122.0″ 124.4″

Width (Min. Tread) 68.6″ 66.0″ 74.9″ 68.6″ 66.0″ 76.9″
Height to Exhaust 74.2″ 81.3″ 80.5″ 74.2″ 81.3″ 81.3″

Weight (Less Options) 3,530 lbs. * 3,800 lbs. 3,530 lbs. * 4,510 lbs.

* Base weight for the 340A and 540A is not listed separately in the original manual. These models share dimensions with their group but vary by equipment configuration.

Notice that the 230A and 530A have significantly more front-axle ground clearance (16.0″) than the industrial models (11.6–12.0″) — a result of the adjustable front axle used on the utility variants. However, the utility models have less transmission ground clearance (8.6″ vs 14.0–14.4″) due to their different housing design.

Which Model Do I Have?

If you're trying to identify which of these six models you own, here are the quickest ways to tell them apart:

  • Gasoline engine? It's a 230A — the only model in the series available with a gas engine. Check for a carburetor and spark plug wires.
  • Short wheelbase (75.8″) with diesel? Check the engine displacement. The 230A diesel has a 175 cu.in. engine (4.2″ bore); the 530A has a larger 201 cu.in. engine (4.4″ bore).
  • Long wheelbase (81.1″) with expanding shoe brakes? You likely have a model with aftermarket modifications — the factory industrial models all came with wet disc brakes.
  • Long wheelbase with 175 cu.in. engine? That's a 340A.
  • Long wheelbase with 183 cu.in. engine? That's a 445.
  • Long wheelbase with 201 cu.in. engine? Compare width — the 540A has a 66.0″ minimum tread width, while the 545 is wider at 76.9″ and heavier at 4,510 lbs.

The model number is also stamped on the tractor's serial number plate, typically located on the right side of the transmission housing.
