Ford 1920 Tractor Operator's Manual

This 76-page operator's manual was originally published by Ford for the 1920 compact utility tractor. It covers everything from daily start-up procedures and hydraulic lift operation to complete maintenance schedules, fluid specifications, and torque values — all the information Ford provided to owners from the factory.

About the Ford 1920

The Ford 1920 was produced from 1987 through 1997 as part of Ford's compact utility tractor lineup, later continuing under the New Holland banner after the 1991 Fiat-Ford merger. Power comes from a Shibaura 1.3L three-cylinder indirect-injection diesel engine producing approximately 32 PTO horsepower — a reliable, fuel-efficient plant that earned a strong reputation among small-acreage owners. The 1920 was offered in both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations, paired with a 9F/3R synchromesh transmission (or the optional hydrostatic on later models), a 540-RPM rear PTO, and Ford's Category I three-point hitch with position and draft control.

Compact enough for loader work, mowing, and light tillage on hobby farms and municipal properties, the 1920 remains widely used today. Parts availability is still reasonable, but correct operating procedures, fluid specs, and adjustment data make the difference between a tractor that runs trouble-free and one that nickel-and-dimes you in the shop.

What This Manual Covers

  • Controls and Instruments — Complete walkthrough of the instrument panel, throttle controls, brake system, differential lock lever, transmission and PTO engagement, hydraulic lift controls, seat and ROPS adjustment, and lighting
  • Operation — Break-in procedures for new or rebuilt engines, correct starting and shutdown sequences, transmission and four-wheel drive engagement, PTO operation, differential lock use, hydraulic lift system operation including draft and position control, towing procedures, wheel tread settings, ballasting and weighting guidelines, and recommended tire pressures for 2WD and 4WD configurations
  • Lubrication and Maintenance — Full maintenance schedule chart for both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive models, approved fuel and lubricant specifications, step-by-step service procedures for engine oil, hydraulic fluid, coolant, fuel filters, air cleaner, and grease points, plus general maintenance items and long-term tractor storage preparation
  • Specifications — Engine, transmission, hydraulic system, PTO, electrical, and dimensional specifications along with a general torque specification table
  • Safety and Reference — International symbol identification, safety precautions, safety and instruction decal locations, predelivery and 50-hour service checklist, and Ford owner assistance information

Why This Manual Matters

  • Correct Fluids, No Guessing — The 1920's hydraulic system doubles as the transmission lube supply. Using the wrong fluid or mixing brands can cause clutch chatter, erratic three-point behavior, and premature seal wear. This manual lists exactly what Ford specified.
  • Maintenance Intervals You Can Trust — Aftermarket "universal" schedules don't account for the Shibaura diesel's specific filter and oil change intervals or the separate greasing requirements for 4WD front axle pivots. The factory chart does.
  • Hydraulic Lift Adjustments — Draft control sensitivity and position control settings are owner-adjustable on the 1920, but only if you understand the linkage and control quadrant. Incorrect settings lead to implement chatter or sluggish response — common complaints that are often just a calibration issue.
  • Wheel Tread and Ballasting Data — Proper tread width and ballast weight vary by implement and terrain. The manual provides Ford's recommended settings to maintain stability and minimize tire wear.
  • Complete Torque Specifications — Wheel lugs, axle bolts, and hydraulic fittings all have specific torque values. Over- or under-torquing these on a compact tractor can cause failures that are expensive relative to the machine's value.
