Ford D Series Tractor-Loader-Backhoe Service Manual - 455D, 555D, 575D, 655D, 675D

This is the complete service manual originally published by Ford for the D Series tractor-loader-backhoe range. It runs 1,106 pages and covers all five models: the 455D, 555D, 575D, 655D, and 675D,  across every production year and serial number. Eleven full sections take you from engine overhaul through fuel injection, transmissions, axles, hydraulics, cab air conditioning, and complete machine teardown, with the wiring diagrams, torque values, clearances, and step-by-step overhaul procedures the Ford dealer network worked from.

About the Ford D Series Backhoe Loaders

The D Series backhoe loaders replaced the earlier C Series. One manual spans the whole lineup, but the five models are not mechanically identical and this manual covers the differences in full, which is exactly why it's worth having the right book in front of you before you start a repair:

  • 455D — Ford 3.3L three-cylinder diesel, roughly 66 engine hp. The only three-cylinder machine in the range, with its own fuel injectors and cooling-system coverage.
  • 555D — Ford 4.2L four-cylinder diesel, roughly 72 engine hp.
  • 575D — Ford 4.2L four-cylinder diesel, roughly 82 engine hp.
  • 655D — Ford 4.4L four-cylinder diesel, roughly 82 engine hp.
  • 675D — Ford 4.4L four-cylinder turbocharged diesel, roughly 93 engine hp. This is the model the manual's turbocharger overhaul section was written for.

All five were offered in two- or four-wheel-drive form with a power-shuttle transmission, four-post ROPS/FOPS, and an optional air-conditioned cab — and this manual addresses every one of those configurations.

What This Manual Covers

Unlike a simple section index, here is what each of the 11 sections actually contains:

  • Section 1: Engine: Production date codes and serial numbers, safety and loader-arm/backhoe locks, three-cylinder diesel description and overhaul, four-cylinder diesel description and overhaul, cooling system (both engine families), troubleshooting, specifications and special tools.
  • Section 2: Fuel Systems: Fuel system description and operation, DPA and DPS distributor injection-pump adjustments, fuel tank/filters/lines overhaul, DPA and DPS injection-pump overhaul, injectors for the 455D and for the 555D/575D/655D, air cleaners, turbocharger overhaul, plus diesel-engine troubleshooting and specifications.
  • Section 3: Electrical System: Wiring, lights and controls with full troubleshooting and wiring diagrams, battery, starting system and overhaul, the A127 55-amp alternator (integral regulator) with test procedures and alternator overhaul, plus specifications and special tools.
  • Section 4: Transmission: Complete coverage of both the 4×4 and 8×8 transmissions — gearshift lever, modulator unit, lock-up and solenoid control valves, front-end overhaul, complete and component overhauls, the transmission electrical control circuit, troubleshooting and specifications.
  • Section 5 — Rear Axle and Brakes: Rear axle, planetary gear assembly, wheel brakes, differential and differential-lock assembly, drive pinion, brake pedal linkage and cross-shaft, differential-lock linkage, twin-cable hand brake, and specifications.
  • Section 6: Power Take-Off: Independent PTO description and operation, pressure-regulating and control valve pressure testing and overhaul, clutch assembly overhaul, reduction gear assembly, hydraulic pump, troubleshooting and specifications.
  • Section 7: Steering and Front Axle: Steering system and power-steering pump troubleshooting and pressure testing, the two-wheel-drive front axle, the front-wheel-drive axle, and the transfer gear assembly, each with its own specifications.
  • Section 8: Hydraulic System, Controls and Frame: Hydraulic circuits, reservoir/filter/oil cooler, hydraulic pump, backhoe and loader control valve assemblies, sideshift hydraulic clamping, swing system, cylinders and cylinder overhaul, flow restrictor valves, backhoe and loader frame/boom/dipperstick/bucket coverage, hoses and tubes, plus hydraulic troubleshooting and pressure testing.
  • Section 9: Cab: Cab glass installation and the complete air-conditioning system — description and operation, diagnosis chart, servicing, condenser/receiver-drier/expansion-valve/evaporator overhaul, A/C electrical controls, and compressor overhaul and specifications.
  • Section 10: Separating the Tractor: Front cover and oil pan removal, engine removal, separating the transmission from the engine and from the rear axle, backhoe removal, and rear axle removal.
  • Section 11: Accessories: Factory option kits including the cold start kit, backup alarm, heavy-duty seat suspension, loader auxiliary valve kits, cutting edges, 4:1 and multi-purpose buckets, 3- and 4-lever backhoe control conversions, extendible dipperstick conversion, reversible stabilizer pads, rear window defroster, beacon and work-lamp kits, and more.

Why This Manual Matters

  • It covers all five models in one book — the right procedures whether you run the three-cylinder 455D or the turbocharged 675D, so you're not guessing which spec applies to your machine.
  • Both injection-pump types are documented — DPA and DPS distributor pumps each get their own adjustment and overhaul procedures, which matters because the correct timing and bleed sequence differs between them.
  • Both transmissions are fully covered — the 4×4 and the 8×8 power-shuttle units are treated separately, down to component-level overhaul and the electrical control circuit.
  • Two-wheel and four-wheel-drive front axles are both addressed, including the front-wheel-drive transfer gear assembly that the 2WD machines don't have.
  • Complete teardown guidance — Section 10 walks through splitting the machine for major engine, transmission, axle, and backhoe service, with the supporting and lifting precautions called out.
  • Full air-conditioning and cab service — including the A/C diagnosis chart and compressor overhaul, which most general repair references leave out entirely.
