John Deere 4020 Tractor Operator's Manual
90 pages – digital download
This downloadable John Deere 4020 tractor manual is the original factory operator's guide covering controls, operation, service, and maintenance for the JD 4020. Produced from 1963 through 1972, the John Deere 4020 became one of the most successful and widely recognized tractors of its era — available in diesel, gasoline, and LP gas configurations, and delivering around 91–94 PTO horsepower in a versatile row-crop and utility package. Its Power Shift transmission option made it a favorite among farmers who needed fast, on-the-go shifting during fieldwork. Decades after production ended, the 4020 remains one of the most collected and actively farmed vintage tractors in North America, and this manual is the definitive reference for operating and maintaining one correctly.

About the John Deere 4020
The John Deere 4020 succeeded the 4010 in 1963 and quickly earned a reputation as one of the hardest-working tractors on the market. It was available in row-crop, standard, hi-crop, and orchard configurations, and offered buyers a choice of three engine types — a 6-cylinder diesel (the most popular), 6-cylinder gasoline, or LP gas. The optional Power Shift transmission, introduced on the 4020, was a major selling point that allowed full-load gear changes without clutching — a significant advantage for row-crop work and loader operation. The 4020 was Nebraska tested at just over 91 PTO horsepower on diesel, making it a strong performer relative to its size class. It remained in production until 1972 and sold in enormous numbers, which is why parts availability remains good today. Whether you're farming one, restoring one, or simply maintaining a working example, this factory manual is the most reliable reference you can have.
Why This Manual Is Essential
- Covers all three fuel variants (diesel, gasoline, LP gas) — critical since operating and service procedures differ between configurations
- Includes factory-correct hydraulic system procedures for both the standard and auxiliary hydraulic systems, which are commonly misunderstood on the 4020
- Provides a complete structured maintenance schedule from daily checks through annual service — essential for keeping a high-hour vintage tractor reliable
- Indispensable for farmers, collectors, and restorers who want the original factory procedures rather than approximations from third-party guides
