Both are twin-cylinder gasoline engines sharing a 3.12 in. bore and a common closure-plate/crankcase architecture, with a fan-and-flywheel cooling system and shrouding. The M18 is rated at 18 horsepower at 3,600 RPM from 42.18 cu. in. of displacement (2.75 in. stroke, 6.0:1 compression), while the M20 is rated at 20 horsepower at 3,600 RPM from 46.98 cu. in.
