Kohler Magnum MV16, MV18 & MV20 Engine Service Manual

This service manual is the workshop repair reference for the Kohler Magnum MV16, MV18, and MV20 vertical-crankshaft engines, running roughly 114 pages of periodic maintenance, troubleshooting, disassembly, inspection, and reassembly procedures. It's a true service manual — component-level teardown and repair, not just operation — backed by specifications, tolerances, standard and special torque values, and a special-tools reference. Originally published by Kohler and delivered here as an instant PDF download you can read on any device or print for the bench.

Models covered: MV16 · MV18 · MV20 (Magnum series, vertical crankshaft; MV18S electric-start and related version codes referenced in the engine identification section)

About the Kohler Magnum MV Series

The Magnum MV16, MV18, and MV20 are air-cooled, twin-cylinder gasoline engines from Kohler's Magnum line — the "MV" designation standing for Magnum, Vertical crankshaft, with a version code (for example "S" for electric start) following the model number on the identification decal. The MV16 and MV18 share a 42.18 cubic-inch displacement with a 3.12-inch bore and 2.75-inch stroke, while the MV20 steps up to 46.98 cubic inches on a 3.06-inch stroke. Compression ratios run 5.8:1 on the MV16 and 6.0:1 on the MV18 and MV20, and horsepower is rated at 3,600 rpm.

These engines ran a wide range of vertical-shaft equipment, and a great many are still in service — which is exactly why factory documentation still matters. When a repair goes past routine maintenance and into the carburetor, ignition, valve train, or short block, you need the manufacturer's clearances and torque figures rather than guesswork, and this book carries them for all three models side by side.

What This Manual Covers

  • General information: Engine model, specification, and serial number identification; safety warnings; oil and fuel recommendations; overall dimensions for MV16, MV18, and MV20; standard torque values; and full specifications, tolerances, and special torque values.
  • Special tools: Valve service tools, seal and bearing installers, the engine analysis kit, and the ignition system tester.
  • Periodic maintenance: Oil and oil-filter service, air cleaner service, spark plug inspection and replacement, and valve service.
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnosing loss of power and the crankcase vacuum test, among other fault-tracing procedures.
  • Air cleaner: Service of the element and element cover.
  • Fuel system: Carburetor service for both the fixed-jet and Walbro adjustable-jet carburetors — troubleshooting, adjustment, disassembly, and reassembly — plus governor service.
  • Lubrication system: Oil pump service and the optional Oil Sentry™ switch installation.
  • Electrical system and components: Ignition system, battery, electric-start starter and brushes, switch systems, and troubleshooting guides for electric-start engines.
  • Disassembly: Step-by-step teardown covering the oil filter, fuel pump, grass screen and fan, flywheel, spark plugs, valves, oil seal and oil pan, camshaft and tappets, and governor gear.
  • Inspection and repair/reconditioning: Valve and valve-seat service, valve guide reaming, piston and piston-ring inspection, and wear-limit checks.
  • Reassembly: Ring installation, governor gear and thrust washer orientation, camshaft end-play measurement, recommended sealants, and torque sequences for reassembling to spec.

Why This Manual Matters

  • Component-level repair, not just operation. This is a workshop service manual — it walks through tearing down and rebuilding the fuel system, ignition, valve train, and short block, which is what you need when a job goes past routine maintenance.
  • The reference data the job depends on. Standard and special torque values, running clearances, and wear limits are tabled for the MV16, MV18, and MV20, so you can reassemble to spec rather than guess.
  • Three models in one book. Shared and model-specific figures are called out together, making it easy to work across the MV16, MV18, and MV20 without hunting for separate references.
  • Carburetor-specific procedures. Separate coverage of the fixed-jet and Walbro adjustable-jet carburetors — including float level, jet torque, and idle-fuel settings — means you're working from the right procedure for the carb actually on the engine.
  • Diagnostic depth. Dedicated troubleshooting guides for power loss, the crankcase vacuum test, and the electrical/starting system help you trace a fault instead of replacing parts blindly.
  • Scarce documentation, restored. Factory literature for these Magnum engines is increasingly hard to find — this searchable, restored PDF puts it back in your hands.
