About the Allis-Chalmers Model “B”
Allis-Chalmers introduced the Model “B” in 1937 and kept it in production through 1957, making it one of the company’s best-selling and longest-running tractors — well over 125,000 were built. Tractor-division manager Harry Merritt had studied the farm census and seen that most American farms were 100 acres or smaller, so the “B” was engineered as a small, affordable machine to mechanize operations that still relied on horses. Its styled sheet metal was the work of industrial designer Brooks Stevens.
Under the hood is a four-cylinder, magneto-ignition engine with a 6-volt electrical system, rated at roughly 22 horsepower at the belt. Early “B” tractors used a smaller engine of about 116 cubic inches; around 1943 the engine was enlarged to 125 cubic inches (3⅜″ bore × 3½″ stroke). Both manuals in this set list the 125-cubic-inch engine, so they document the later, larger-displacement production version. The “B” was also one of the era’s more adaptable row-crop tractors, with an adjustable rear wheel tread (40½″ to 52½″) to suit different crop spacings.
