About the MF 180
The MF 180 was offered with a choice of gasoline or diesel engine, and this manual documents both, including the separate starting and shut-off arrangements each requires. Diesel models use a fuel shut-off control knob and a starter-only switch, while gasoline models use a choke control and a combination ignition-starter switch. The manual gives particular attention to the diesel fuel injection equipment, with a full page of precautions on clean fuel handling, agglomerator bowl draining, and filter service to protect the injection pump and injectors.
Both engines are Perkins four-cylinder units of 236 cu. in., sharing a 3-7/8 inch bore and 5 inch stroke. The gasoline AG4.236 runs 7.0:1 compression with a Champion UJ-8 plug and a fixed non-adjustable main jet; the diesel A4.236 runs 16:1 with a built-in injection pump governor, multi-hole injectors, and a two-filter full-flow fuel system. The diesel was measured at 63.68 maximum PTO horsepower at Nebraska Test No. 900.
Transmission choices are a strong point of the MF 180. A standard gear shift lever combined with a dual range shift lever provides six forward and two reverse speeds, while the optional Multi-Power shift lever extends that to twelve forward and four reverse speeds by shifting from Low to High in each selected gear. The tractor could be equipped with either "Live" PTO or "Independent" PTO, and that choice changes the clutch: Live PTO tractors run a dual dry-disc clutch of 11 and 9 inches, while Independent PTO tractors run a single 11 inch dry disc. The hydraulics run a full quadrant of Draft, Position, Pressure, and Response control, with a lift pump giving 4.8 gpm and an optional auxiliary pump taking combined flow to 12.8 gpm. These machines remain in active use, and having the original operating and maintenance reference on hand is what keeps them set up and serviced the way the factory intended.
