Complete specifications for the Massey Ferguson MF 180 tractor, transcribed from the specifications section of the factory operator's manual (Form No. 1448 073 M3, dated 5/73). The MF 180 was offered with a choice of gasoline or diesel Perkins four-cylinder engines, both of 236 cu. in. on an identical 3-7/8 inch bore and 5 inch stroke, differing chiefly in compression: 7.0:1 for the gasoline AG4.236 against 16:1 for the diesel A4.236.

Transmission was either a six-speed giving six forward and two reverse, or the optional Multi-Power, which adds two-stage compounding to give twelve forward and four reverse. The clutch specification follows the PTO choice rather than the transmission: tractors with “Live” PTO use a dual dry-disc clutch of 11 and 9 inches, while tractors with “Independent” PTO use a single 11 inch dry disc.

Before you use the horsepower figures below, read footnote 3. This manual prints two specification pages, 73 and 74, that give different horsepower and different front tread. Both are reproduced here as printed.

Horsepower

Read this before using the figures. The manual prints horsepower twice, on pages 73 and 74, and the two disagree. Neither page carries a heading or model designation to distinguish them. Both are reproduced exactly as printed.3

1 Reproduced as printed, but the two figures do not convert. 29 U.S. gallons is 24.2 Imperial gallons, not 23.2. Working the other way, 23.2 Imperial gallons is 27.9 U.S. Four of the six capacity rows in this table convert to within 0.6 percent, so this row and the power steering row are the outliers rather than the manual using an unusual conversion factor throughout.
2 Reproduced as printed, and this one is further out than the fuel tank. 3 U.S. quarts is 2.5 Imperial quarts, not 2.9, a discrepancy of 16 percent. Note that 3.5 U.S. quarts converts to 2.91 Imperial, matching the printed Imperial figure almost exactly, which suggests the U.S. figure may have lost a half.
3 This manual prints its specification page twice, and the two versions disagree. Pages 73 and 74 carry the same tire sizes, wheelbase, height, rear tread, overall width, ground clearance, turning radius and shipping weights, but differ in two places. Page 73 gives the front tread as a range of 52 to 84 inches in 4 inch steps, where page 74 gives a single width of 52 inches. And the horsepower figures differ on three of four lines.
Neither page carries a heading, model designation or variant label that would distinguish them, so this page reproduces both rather than choosing between them. Two things are worth noting when you decide which to rely on. First, only page 74 cites a source: Nebraska Test No. 900, for the diesel figures. Second, only page 74 is candid that the gasoline figures were never officially tested and are manufacturer estimates. The diesel PTO figure of 63.68 is the one number both pages agree on.
