About the Ford 9600
The Ford 9600 was introduced in 1975 as the top of Ford's redesigned 600 series lineup, stepping up from the earlier 9000. It runs a Ford 401 cubic inch six-cylinder turbodiesel rated at 2200 rpm, Nebraska tested at approximately 112 PTO horsepower, which put it in direct competition with comparably sized tractors from John Deere and International Harvester.
Steering is hydrostatic with a tiltable and telescopic wheel, brakes are self-compensating hydraulic wet discs, and the hydraulics run a PTO-driven gear pump delivering 16 gpm at a 2500 psi relief setting, feeding a Category II or III linkage. Bare weight runs from 9,800 to 10,320 lbs. depending on configuration. The optional Dual Power transmission allowed range changes within each gear under full load, and changes the service fill to 69 quarts against 64 for the 8-speed.
One thing to check before buying an implement: the 9600's power take-off is 1000 rpm. The specification section gives an engine speed for 1000 rpm PTO operation and no 540 rpm figure at all.

The 9600 and 9000 share their engine, all capacities, hydraulics, PTO, tires and every general dimension, which makes it tempting to use one manual for the other. Do not. They differ in five places, two of which are pedal free travel adjustments: the 9000 specifies 5/8 in. of clutch pedal free travel where the 9600 wants 1-3/8 to 1-5/8 in.
