Ford 9600 Tractor Specifications

Specs HubFord › 9600

Complete specifications for the Ford 9600 agricultural tractor, transcribed from the specifications section of the factory operator's manual (SE 3378). The 9600 is a turbocharged six-cylinder diesel of 401 cu. in. (6571 cc) rated at 2200 rpm, with hydrostatic power steering, self-compensating hydraulic wet disc brakes, and a PTO-driven gear pump delivering 16 gpm to a Category II or III linkage. Bare weight runs from 9,800 to 10,320 lbs. depending on configuration.

As on the Ford 9000, the power take-off is 1000 rpm only. The specification section gives an engine speed for 1000 rpm PTO operation and no 540 rpm figure anywhere.

How the 9600 differs from the Ford 9000

These two manuals give identical figures for the engine, all capacities, cooling, electrical, fuel, steering, PTO, hydraulics, tires and every general dimension. They differ in exactly five places. Two of them are pedal adjustments, so if you are working on a 9600 from a 9000 manual, or the reverse, check this table first.

Differences between the Ford 9000 and Ford 9600
Specification Ford 9000 (SE 3259) Ford 9600 (SE 3378)
Clutch pedal free-travel 5/8 in. (1.59 cm) 1-3/8 to 1-5/8 in. (3.49–4.13 cm)
Brake pedal free travel 1/16 to 3/16 in. (1.587 to 4.763 mm) 3/16 to 1/4 in. (4.763 to 6.350 mm)
Front end weights 80 lbs. (36.3 kg) each, maximum of thirteen 100 lbs. (45.5 kg) each, maximum of sixteen
Rear wheel weights 87-1/2 lbs. (39.7 kg) each 85 lbs. (38.6 kg) each
Engine oil classification Supplement I (DM) and Series III (DS) CC and CD

The oil classification difference is a matter of when each book was written rather than what the engines want. DM and DS are the older API designations; CC and CD are their successors. The 9600 manual also documents a brake master cylinder auxiliary reservoir, which the 9000 specification section does not mention.

Below 32°F Low Ash SAE 10W (CD)
Above 32°F Low Ash SAE 30 (CD)

The manual adds that in areas where prolonged periods of extreme temperature are encountered, local lubricant practices are acceptable: Low Ash SAE 5W (CC) in extreme cold, or Low Ash SAE 40 (CD) or SAE 50 (CD) in extreme heat.

Fuel sulfur note, as printed: with a sulfur content below 1.0%, an API CC oil may be used instead of CD, but the oil and filter change interval must be reduced to 50 hours. Between 1.0% and 1.3% sulfur a CD oil must be used (except at 10°F and below), with the interval reduced to 50 hours. Fuel with a sulfur content above 1.3% is not recommended.2

Notes:
1 Reproduced as printed. 4.40 in. is 111.76 mm, not 111.18. The imperial figures are the sound ones: 4.40 in. bore and stroke across six cylinders gives 401.4 cu. in., matching the printed 401, and 401 cu. in. converts to 6571 cc exactly as printed. The same pairing appears in the Ford 7000, 8600 and 9000 manuals, so it is a house convention rather than an error unique to this book.
2 Note the interval. The Ford 8600 manual gives 150 hours for the equivalent sulfur condition where this manual gives 50, despite the two books using the same CC and CD classifications. Both are reproduced as printed.
3 This figure differs from the Ford 9000. See the comparison table near the top of this page.
4 The specification section gives an engine speed for 1000 rpm PTO operation only. No 540 rpm figure is printed anywhere in it. Reported as printed rather than as an omission.
5 The manual prints “See table on page 62” here, referring to the engine oil recommendations reproduced above.
Every imperial and metric pair in the general dimensions table above converts correctly.
