John Deere 4020 Tractor Specifications

Specs Hub › John Deere › 4020

Complete specifications for the John Deere 4020 tractor, with the diesel, gasoline and LP-gas versions side by side. Every figure is transcribed from the specifications pages of the factory operator's manual, OM-R34410. The 4020 was the six-cylinder flagship of John Deere's New Generation line, built at Waterloo, Iowa from 1963 to 1972. The diesel used a larger 404 cu. in. engine and a 24-volt starting system; the gasoline and LP-gas tractors shared a 340 cu. in. engine. Buyers could choose the Syncro-Range or the Power Shift transmission, and the manual lists both.

Ground Speeds

Miles per hour for row-crop tractors with 15.5-38 rear tires (loaded radius 28.5 in.). The manual says standard tractors have similar ground speeds. Engine working speeds may be varied between 1500 and 2200 rpm on the hand throttle, and transport speeds up to 2500 rpm on the foot throttle. Both transmissions have eight forward speeds; the Syncro-Range has two reverse speeds and the Power Shift four.

Notes:
1 The manual states that these observed horsepower figures are official at 2200 engine rpm. It does not cite a Nebraska test number.
2 The diesel column is left blank (dotted) in the manual for idle for engine shutoff.
3 1900 engine rpm gives the SAE rated 540 or 1000 rpm PTO speed. Some PTO-driven implements are operated at other speeds; see the implement operator's manual.
4 As printed. Power Shift 5th and 6th at 1500 rpm (5.6 and 7.4 mph) are higher than at 1900 rpm (5.5 and 7.1 mph), and 6th matches 7th. Scaled from the other columns, 5th and 6th would be about 4.3 and 5.6 mph, so the figures may be shifted down one row in the manual. TODO: confirm against the scan.
The manual prints "Additonal" in the tire note; spelling normalised.
