About the Ford FW series
The FW tractors are a different class of machine from the rest of Ford's range. They are articulated, steered by two double-acting cylinders on a centre pivot rather than by a front axle, and they are powered by Cummins V-8 diesels rather than Ford's own engines.
- FW-20: Cummins V-555, 555 cu. in., 210 hp, 2850 rpm rated
- FW-30: Cummins V-903, 903 cu. in., 265 hp, 2600 rpm rated
- FW-40: Cummins V-903, 903 cu. in., 295 hp, 2600 rpm rated
- FW-60: Cummins VT-903 turbocharged, 903 cu. in., 335 hp, 2600 rpm rated
The fuel tank holds 225 gallons. Maximum ballasted weight is 34,000 lbs. across the range. The transmission is a Model 1010-2A “Split Torque” unit giving ten forward speeds and two reverse, or twenty and four with the optional two-speed transfer case. Brakes are multiple dry disc, self-energizing ball and ramp type. Hydraulics are open centre, with a pump delivering 30 to 33 gpm and remote flow adjustable from 8 to 20 gpm at 2250 psi.
A three-point hitch was an option rather than standard equipment, and the PTO is an optional independent hydrostatic unit available at either 540 or 1000 rpm.
