Ford FW-20, FW-30, FW-40 & FW-60 Tractor Specifications

Specs HubFord › FW-20, FW-30, FW-40 & FW-60

Complete specifications for the Ford FW-20, FW-30, FW-40 and FW-60 articulated four-wheel drive tractors, transcribed from the specifications section of the factory operator's manual (SE 3571A), which covers all four models in one book.

These are a different class of machine from everything else in Ford's range. They are articulated, steered by two double-acting cylinders on a centre pivot rather than by a front axle, and they are powered by Cummins V-8 diesels rather than Ford's own engines: a 555 cu. in. V-555 in the FW-20 and a 903 cu. in. V-903 in the rest, the FW-60's turbocharged. Output runs from 210 to 335 horsepower, the fuel tank holds 225 gallons, and maximum ballasted weight is 34,000 lbs. across the range.

There is no conventional three-point hitch as standard; the hitch is an option, and the PTO is an optional independent hydrostatic unit available at either 540 or 1000 rpm. The transmission is a Model 1010-2A “Split Torque” unit giving ten forward speeds and two reverse, or twenty and four with the optional two-speed transfer case.

Tire and Speed Data

Speeds in miles per hour, by tire size and gear. LO and HI are the Split Torque ranges within each gear.

On the optional 20-speed transmission: the manual prints two further tables for tractors fitted with the two-speed transfer case. Their standard-range columns are identical to the tables below, gear for gear and tire for tire. The additional overdrive columns run at a constant 1.126 times the standard figure, verified across the tables to within half a percent. So a 20-speed FW-20 on 18.4 × 34 tires doing 14.15 mph in 5th LO standard range does 15.94 mph in 5th LO overdrive.5

Should the recommended engine oil not be readily available, the manual gives these commercial equivalents:

Commercial Engine Oil by Temperature
Temperature Viscosity Grade and API Classification
−10°F to 30°F (−23°C to −1°C) SAE 10W (CD or CC/CD)
20°F to 60°F (−7°C to 16°C) SAE 20-20W (CD or CC/CD)
40°F (4°C) and above SAE 30 (CD or CC/CD)

ROPS Cab Mounting Torques

ROPS Cab Mounting Bolt Torques
Eight 1/2 × 1-1/2 in. (12.7 × 38 mm) Grade 5 bolts holding the four cab isolators 75 lbs. ft. (101.7 N·m)
Four 3/4 × 4 in. (19 × 101.6 mm) Grade 8 bolts securing the cab to the tractor frame 260 lbs. ft. (352.6 N·m)

Caution, as printed in the manual: if the ROPS cab must ever be removed or replaced, make certain that the proper hardware is used and that the recommended torque values are applied to the attaching bolts. This is rollover protection structure; the bolt grade matters as much as the torque.

Notes:
1 The metric displacements are consistently about half a percent below a straight conversion: 555 cu. in. is 9,095 cc and 903 cu. in. is 14,797 cc, against the printed 9,046 and 14,719. Both figures correspond to a conversion factor of 16.30 cc per cubic inch rather than the exact 16.387, so this is a rounding convention rather than an error in either number.
2 Reproduced as printed, but the units are mixed. In each pair the bore is given in millimetres and the stroke in centimetres, while the bracket is labelled cm for both. 4-5/8 in. is 117 mm (11.7 cm) and 4-1/8 in. is 10.4 cm; 5-1/2 in. is 140 mm (14.0 cm) and 4-3/4 in. is 12.06 cm.
3 Reproduced with one correction. The manual prints the turning radius as 14.8 with an inch mark, which would be absurd for a tractor 22 feet long. The metric figure of 451 cm settles it: 451 cm is 14.8 feet. The unit mark is wrong, not the number.
4 The manual heads this column group “Lateral Time Clearance”. It means tire clearance. Every figure in the table converts correctly.
5 The 1.126 multiplier is a derivation from the manual's own figures, not a number Ford printed. It was checked across forty standard and overdrive pairs spanning all five gears and both reverse ranges, giving a spread of half a percent, which is what rounding to two decimal places would produce. It is consistent with the manual's statement that the optional transmission is the same Model 1010-2A with a two-speed transfer case added. For any figure you intend to rely on, read it from the manual's own 20-speed table.
6 This figure appears to be a misprint. The manual's own 20-speed table gives 14.42 for the same tractor, tire and gear. Across the other twelve rows of this table the ratio of 5th LO to 4th LO is 1.598 without exception; this row alone gives 1.554. Applying 1.598 to the printed 4th LO figure of 9.02 gives 14.42, matching the 20-speed table. The printed 14.02 is reproduced above rather than silently corrected, but 14.42 is almost certainly the intended value.
7 Reproduced as printed. The specification number given is M2C134-A, but the part numbers quoted alongside it, 1GM2C53-A and 5GM2C53-A, are M2C53 fluid. One of the two appears to be wrong. Note that the Ford 6700 and 7700 manual specifies M2C53A for the transmission and rear axle.
