Specs Hub › Massey Ferguson › MF 4800 / 4840 / 4880
Complete specifications for the Massey Ferguson MF 4800, MF 4840, and MF 4880 four-wheel-drive tractors, transcribed from the specifications section of the factory operator's manual and assembly instructions (Form No. 1448 471 M2, dated 8/79). All three run a Cummins 903 cu. in. (14.8 litre) V8 diesel, direct injection, at 15.5:1 compression: the MF 4800 and MF 4840 use the naturally aspirated V903, while the MF 4880 steps up to the turbocharged VT903.
Bare engine horsepower, by manufacturer's estimate, runs 225 hp for the MF 4800, 265 hp for the MF 4840, and 320 hp for the MF 4880 — the same block across three power levels, primarily through turbocharging and tuning. Drive runs through a 14 inch four-plate multi-disc oil-cooled clutch to either a 12-speed manual transmission or an 18-speed unit combining a 3-speed power shift with the manual gearing. Brakes are an 18 inch hydraulically actuated disc on the drive line, and the hydraulic system is open center with a 3-spool valve, three float positions, and three gear pumps serving the auxiliary hydraulics, steering, and the lift circuit and transmission lubrication separately.
